A Permanent Pivot?
The last 2 years, I’ve been offering a Pyware Tutorial and a Visual Design Workshop. I first wrote about putting them together in my entries, “Presenting a Pyware/Visual Design Workshop” Jan. 27 2020 and “Putting Together a Pyware Tutorial” June 8 2020. The first intention was these events be live in-person happenings. I’m sure we all remember how things changed drastically and quickly during the spring and summer of 2020. Pivot became the most referred to of buzz words. Well, I had to pivot. An in-person workshop was not going to happen. What to do? Pivot to Zoom! Zoom seemed to save the day. I was able to continue with my planned events, albeit online. And you know, it worked pretty well.
Of course, we would all rather attend presentations in-person over being on the internet just about any day. And as a presenter, I would rather be in-person, but after using Zoom a few times for these types of interactions and figuring out how to format/present material, it’s not soooooo bad.
In fact, I think my pivot has had its advantages. My workshop participants don’t have to shell out travel expense dollars to get to Lincoln, NE. Just in case you’ve never tried to fly into Lincoln or even Omaha, let’s just say they aren’t big markets for air travel and get expensive. Not having to rent meeting space saves me money which I can pass on to the participants as well. So the charges for the workshop are truly for the instruction. That’s it!
I’m sure many are super surprised when they see what I’m charging for a 2 1/2 day visual design workshop. And they may even be in doubt as to the quality of the instruction, materials, etc. But I can assure you that my approach to teaching visual design is fresh, new, and effective. Maybe effective enough that one day my sessions will be in-person. Or could this be a permanent pivot?
