Drill Dojo Doodles

Obsession? Or Creative Outlet?

The idea for this entry came from something that happened a few months ago. I was sitting at my computer in the Drill Dojo. I was working on a design project. I’ll just call it that because it wasn’t a design that would actually be performed by any ensemble. You see, I do little short designs for holidays or other events throughout the year. I know, not everyone would do such a thing, but it brings me joy and helps me keep the ax sharp. Anyway, my wife walks into the room. She stops and after a few seconds asks, “What are you working on?” Knowing full well that I didn’t have any paying or school visual design jobs that time of year. I replied, “Oh it’s a little project for (insert holiday because I don’t remember which one)”. Well that brought the response of, “Obsessed much? You mean you are designing something that no one will ever perform and that you will never be paid for?” I replied, “Yes.” Then she made her way out of the room while I urned my attention back to the computer screen.

The above story really did happen. The dialogue may/may not be completely accurate but I assure you the intentions of the words are. Okay, some may say I’m obsessed with visual design, but I look at it as a way I can be creative. When I see the animation. just the animation of a design that will never see the light of day, it still gives me a way to express myself. It brings me joy. Chances are, it brings others some joy, too. Maybe not as much, but some. I consider myself lucky that something I do that earns a bulk of my living expenses is also something I enjoy doing. I would wish that for anyone.

Yes, I’m currently working on a little project for the holiday season. It isn’t finished yet, but Christmas isn’t here just yet, either. Here’s to a safe and joyous holiday season!—DB
