Putting Together a Pyware Tutorial

I’ve already written about putting together my first ever Pyware/Visual Design Workshop in past posts, but I wanted to share a little about the preparation of the Pyware Tutorial I’ll be using with the Drill Dojo Pyware Tutorial (May 21-27, 2021). This portion of the workshop will feature an extensive written Pyware Tutorial and accompanying instructional videos. The Drill Dojo Tutorial starts at the very beginning stages of using the software and then culminates with a fully animated drill file of 12+ sets.

My first version of a Pyware Tutorial was put together in 2015. I decided that a more product driven approach needed to be taken for instruction of the software than I had seen either from the developers of Pyware or others involved in teaching the software as part of their university marching band techniques classes. Pygraphics supplies a wealth of information about their program, but it is in a very clinical format. I wanted to put together something that would be much more like the process of using the software to design an actual marching band/drum corps show. I made sure a variety of tools were used while balancing the amount of repetition needed to really begin to feel comfortable as a software user. The tutorial came complete with a sound file that was used to phrase and sync with the design. This was the foundation I used for the 2020 update in the Drill Dojo Pyware Tutorial.

I also wanted to fold some basic design concepts into the tutorial, so there is discussion about design decisions, use of space, pacing, visual orchestration, form evolution/relationship, etc. The intent is for the Participant to come away with something that provides a sense of accomplishment and practical application of the software.

Step by step instructional videos are provided to augment the text format and are intended to lead the Participant through a logical sequence to the completion of the drill file. The videos and tutorial document are cross-referenced to help guide the Participants through the entire process. Whether you are someone who has a little experience or NO experience with using Pyware, this tutorial will surely provide a foundation for expanded knowledge and application of the software. ALL Drill Dojo Workshop Participants receive FREE use of the latest version of Pyware for the length of the workshop (June 26-July 2).
